CULTIVAR partners have published the report Cultural heritage, traditional know-how and local food production: paths and good practices for sustainable development in Cabo Verde and São Tomé e Príncipe (Deliverable 2.2), led by the University of Cape Verde and the University of Évora, with contributions from all partners.
The report analyses the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental conditions of Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. Its aim is to identify the main opportunities and constraints affecting development in both countries. The study follows the principles of territorial diagnosis and uses SWOT analysis to assess strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats across several sectors.
Two field missions in São Tomé and Príncipe and Cabo Verde, in March and April 2025, supported this work. European partners from the University of Évora, University of Sassari, and UNIMED directly engaged with local contexts, presenting the CULTIVAR Project to relevant stakeholders. The missions included technical visits, informal conversations, and unstructured interviews with key actors, such as public institutions, museums and other cultural organisations, policymakers, associations, tourism operators, private companies, and local producers, to deepen understanding of local social, cultural, and economic dynamics.
These missions provided essential qualitative data, identified good practices and challenges, and strengthened collaboration between European and local partners. The resulting diagnosis focuses on four areas, cultural heritage, natural heritage, tourism, and local food products, and supports a comparative analysis between the two countries.
The report will serve as a strategic decision-support tool and contribute to inclusive growth, environmental conservation, and cultural valorisation, in line with the objectives of the CULTIVAR Project.
